Supposedly, the New Idea and New Holland mowers are better than the rest for slopes. They both have individual gearboxes (modules), thus not allowing the lubricant to all go down hill. The NI has a long shaft that drives a helical gear in each case, the NH has short shafts that mesh from one module to the next. For either one, if you do shell out a module, at least it will only affect that one, and not take out the others with it.

The NI uses EP-O grease, aka corn head grease :) in the modules.

This is all true a couple years ago too. Other manufacturers may have changed their design, but at least it gives you something to look for.

We have a NI 5407 (7'). For ditches, trimming etc., I wouldn't want one any bigger, too many places around here that are too tight. For the few hours I do it, I'll make multiple passes if needed.
