Subject: Please continue to "buy" your grass seed.

Buy lots of grass seed. But just to make sure you are getting quality stuff for your money, make sure it say grown in Oregon on the bag. You dont want to be buying stuff grown in those bad countries like Canada or Australia or that other 3rd world country,.............uh..............Missouri. LOL, jus kid'n, jus kid'n guys, dont get you poly seed bags all bunched up now........;-)

Toby if it was me I'd make sure the machine has a variable speed fan and that it can go way slow if needed. Get whatever size and brand comes up on sale somewhere for next to nothing. The bigger the machine, the more custom work you can do. Of course the ability to haul it on a gooseneck trailer behind a 3/4 ton pickup is nice too. If you have your own storage, and are going to be using the seed yourself, you can then after finishing harvest, make a small modification to the machine to allow you to use the combine to re-clean the seed and get it reasonable clean. Or, if you're not too far from a cleaner plant, find out what they charge for cleaning and then when harvesting, take a sample there to see what your cleanout percentage is. That will help decide whether you want to re-run it through your combine first or just go directly to the cleaner. That also depends how clean your seed fields are from weeds you dont want to be spreading. You may think you wont need to have the seed cleaned, I dunno, but if you dont know how to check the difference between a seed blank and a viable seed, you may, or may not, end up storing and planting a lot of blank seed. Just depends how much experience you have growing grass.

Biggest thing on the acreage side, is what sort of yeilds for seed can you get? If you can only get 500lbs acre, you may have to sharpen the pencil a little more. If you can get 1500lbs acre, you get by with a third the acreage which would sure make a difference in figuring the viability of growing your own.

Good luck with your project. Let us know how it turns out. And remember, Oregon grown seed is allways available and we wont hold it against you if you try and fail at your own seed growing business. We'll still be here to sell you seed....;-)
