Subject: RE: buying a older combine for seed

Macon, IL
You may have to look a while to find one that won't cost more in repairs than purchase price-but with some looking you can find some decent small old combines out there for $1,000.

Don't forget to figure in fuel, oil changes, repairs though-on that small of acres that may be more than custom costs.

As you look make sure you get something you can get parts for. For example a Deere 4400 won't cost much more than a 55, but will be much easier to get parts. I can't speak firsthand but I have heard AgCo does a decent job of stocking for the old gleaners. If there is a salvage yard within 100 miles of you you may want to check and see what they have. (Sikeston, MO has a big one)

As for models I would think Deere 3300,4400 IH 715-915, not up on my comparible gleaner models.

Do you have a place to store it? Combines stored outside don't fare well and will cost you a lot more in repairs.
