Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot
I had an 89 two wheel drive 3/4 ton in high school that would get around 12-14. One of the best running rigs I ever had, but a two wheel drive just isn't cool for a high school kid ;) It was fuel injected however. The guy who has it now still has original engine with around 300,000 miles one it. Wife had a carbureted 80 something 1/2 ton 4x4 and it got around 10-12. Those inline sixes are very good, durable engines but I don't think they get great mileage. Most are geared a little low as they don't have a lot of zoom. Good torque, just not fast. Just right for a farm rig.

For that kind of money I'd look at something maybe a little newer. I bought a 96 Chevy 4x4 a few years ago with 85,000 miles on it for $7500, and sold the camper shell for $500. Other than brakes and drivers side door hinges I haven't put a dime in it. Has around 200,000 miles now. The Vortec engine runs well and farming it gets around 12-14 mpg if I'm not hauling or towing much.
