Fuel milage of a 1/2 ton Ford with a 300 / 6. Should I do this?

 I've got a '75 F250 4x4 with the 300 I6.  Nice tough simple truck.  Worst consistent troubles have been with power steering (don't bother any more) and the u-joints (it's got a lift kit).  Well, that and finding parts for the 4wd bits if the parts truck doesn't have them anymore.  I hate not being able to get parts easily if something's broken.  Most of the auto parts places around here are getting so that a '75 isn't in their parts book anymore.  Heck, I've even got a '93 E350 cargo van that has some parts that Ford doesn't make any more.
