Jim is correct that banding fertilizer is often more efficient than broadcasting (although in wet climates/years, broadcast performs very well). I would like to point out that banding can be accomplished without all the soil disturbance associated with strip-till. Side-band openers on the planter do the job nicely, for instance. If you are adamant about not having fertilizer on the planter, it is possible to run a low-disturbance injection system as a separate pass.
