Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | A buddy of mine had an 85 diesel that would destroy the glow plug controller about every two years.
On the 85, it was a plastic gadget combining the controller and glow plug relay in one unit at the left rear of the engine. It had the two heavy stud bolts where the glow plug feed wires connected to the sides of the thing.
There was a gang plug on top with 4 or more small wires, this was where the problem would develop.
Normal engine vibration would rattle that gang plug until the terminals would break loose from the controllers printed circuit board. Early on in the failure, a shake of the controller gang plug, slamming a door , or cranking the engine a bit would sometimes get enough of a connection to get the controller working.
As the damage to the controller board got worse, it finally got to where the glow plugs refused to work no matter how much coaxing, then it was time for a new high $$ controller. He replaced 3-4 controllers, then put on a button switch so he could manually time how long the glow plugs were on. Had to be careful though, if you held the button too long you could burn out the glow plugs. |
