I got a '97 5.7 that has knocked at startup for the last 140000 miles. If I let it warm up for a minute or so it quits,otherwise it sounds like a diesel till it gets warm. Mechanic said it was built with damn big bores and will knock till pistons expand from heat. Truck has 198000 on it and uses about two quart of 5w30 full synthetic in 10000 mile. Good Luck
