Dave,

If you are using oats, you need to get it out early. Here in South Central PA, August is the best month. If you have to wait to mid to late September, such as after corn silage harvest, you may not get a whole lot of growth before cold weather sets in. It is usually just a gamble. So, the earlier the better.
