I think that is the way it works Ted. If I recall correctly if the Outback ground speed interface is used with a Dickey John radar, DJ has power at the connector from the radar and this powers the GSI but with other brands of radar that do not have 12v available at the connector it has to be supplied separately. This is what we had to do with the radars used on our JD's.
Without going out and looking at it I would not swear to the above but at any rate there should have been instructions that came with the interface. Note in the picture there is an extra cable with a power lead attached . This adapts from the 4 pin connector to three pin and supplies the power to the GSI. This is all from my faulty memory as it slowly comes back to me so by all means anyone following this advice, follow the instructions, which are also pictured. John
