Gypsum is Calcium Sulfate. The deal is the calcium replaces the sodium on the clay. Then the sodium becomes a fairly soluble molecule and can be leached out of the root zone.
Remember the sodium must have a route to depart the root zone for this to work. It is also possible for the sodium to ride along a clay or rock shelf and emerge later in a seep.
