Subject: Re: strip till

Soutwest Ks.
I have been strip tilling for four years now with continuous corn under pivot irrigation. So far I haven't been able to reduce fertilizer rates. This year I had to fertigate with sprinklers pre-tassle stage to try to give the corn a boost. It appeared to be nitrogen deficient. I run a shank strip till rig in the fall in real heavy soil types and it is possible I have more surface leak than what I realize. I apply anhydrous and dry in the band. I am applying approx. 1.2 lbs of actual N for estimated yield goal.
I am starting to see that high residue conditions tend to tie up nitrogen and may take a little extra N. If there would just be a way to speed up residue break down!!
