Subject: RE: Underwater corn that is dented

Jersey Shore, PA
We had that situation here in PA in 2004 Sept 17 to be exact. Most of our corn fields were completely under water. The usda/fsa claimed that this scenario had never happened before at this growth stage. They determined that the crop could was damaged by contaminants in the flood water and recommended that everyone test samples of their flooded crops in order to be able to sell. We had a local mill willing to accept the corn as long as it passed their normal tests so we got rid of it that way. We did however lose out on the LDP because the govt said we didnt have it formally tested and even though we sold it to a mill, FSA wouldnt pay the ldp.

The only problem to look out for is sprouting in the ears. Some around had that problem. Its also a real joy to combine. We had to replace lots of bearings after that season......very dirty harvest season.

Many mills around here refused to accept the crop so it could be a challenge to get rid of. Best of luck

Scott

below is a shot of one of our corn fields that year. The bottom right corner of the pic is a fully mature standing field of corn thats completely(as you can see) covered. The river normally stays within that treeline above the barn.
