I am not sure I agree with your analysis of the corn trial. I believe large strip trials are a valuable source of information, especially when looking at hybrid characteristics such as standability, disease tolerance, height, etc. However you can not not run "real statistics" on a single replication and come up with an analysis that means anything as far as the yields. If you had a couple of the trials with the same set of treatments then we could draw some conclusions when we run the stats over the multiple locations.
LSD's in a nutshell take into consideration the variability between reps and the differences between the hybrids. If there is a large enough difference between the hybrids when the variability is taken out then we can say significantly that there are differences between hybrids.
