Subject: RE: Pictures of corn storage shed being built....Gilman IL

Chebanse, IL.....

Cargill in Gilman, IL is building similar looking building. Gilman's must be bigger, the flat-storage single bldg will hold 6.2 mil bus. Elevator facility will then be 8.4 mil bus. The article attached is 1 yr old. They are finishing up the conveyor system now. The main dumpsite is on the E side of the IL Central (now CN) tracks & the building is on the W side. So-everything goes out & OVER the tracks. Rail service problems really throws a wrench in the gears of fall harvest in NE IL. Really bad in '06. Empty 50-100 car trains will sit at a site 50 mis from their destination elevator for a week. Everyone knows where the cars are & you can see them & touch them, but you just can't get at them. CN has to move them down the main line.....when they get to it. Elevators can fill a 50 car train in less than a day & then cars sit loaded for 5 days. I still say the big culprit was when IC removed the 2nd set of tracks about 35 yrs ago. Everything became siding traffic.

Here's Cargill article. They have a different mgr @ Gilman now:

Cargill to Expand Storage Capacity at Its Gilman, Ill., Grain Elevator

GILMAN, Ill. — Cargill is nearly quadrupling the storage capacity at its Gilman, Ill. grain facility with plans to build a 6.2-million bushel flat warehouse to the west of its 2.2-million bushel elevator. Construction is expected to begin this month for an early 2007 completion, increasing the facility’s total storage capacity to 8.4 million bushels.

“We are pleased to invest in solutions that benefit our producer customers,” said Doug Childers, farm service group manager at the Cargill AgHorizons’ Gilman office, noting that an additional individual will be hired to bring the staff to nine full-time employees. “The expanded grain storage capacity will facilitate easier, faster grain unloading and shorter truck lines for our customers throughout the year. The additional storage will make us less dependent on rail service, especially during the busy harvest period, and it will contribute to a more competitive and efficient operation that benefits customers.”

Grain will be transported to the warehouse from the existing elevator via enclosed conveyors, which will also convey reclaimed grain material back to the elevator. There will be no significant impact on local traffic patterns. The warehouse will become the first business operating in the city’s new Gilman Business Park.
