Subject: Re: pasture rent prices

I have mostly native pasture and intend to graze mature non-lactating cows year round. Doesn't work every year so a good supply of hay is needed to back up the grazing when it's covered with 3 feet of snow.

I've cut back on feeding cake, ear corn, etc since I've gone to late April calving. Cows just don't need as many high quality groceries calving later in the year. I start out feeding the worst hay I have in the dead of winter and work up to the best when nearing calving. Don't feed anything else but basic salt/mineral.

Of course the trade-off for later calving is lighter calves but calving is a lot less work and there are more live calves. The cows have to be able to do it on their own and they do if the weather allows them to.
