Could be most any of the diseases already mentioned, best to cover all the bases and test for as much as you can. I think those cows are a valuable source of information about the problem.

One thing I didn't mention is testing for BVD persistent infections. Conventional wisdom is a lot of the cows in the first third of gestation will abort when exposed to a BVD-PI animal unless they are vaccinated against BVD with one of the vaccines that is proven to prevent fetal infection. The ones that do not abort along with those in the middle third of gestation may give birth to PI calves, while most of those only exposed to a PI animal in late gestation will give birth to calves already immune to BVD after they clear the virus.

Most labs charge about $3 per test to do the ear notches. It would be better to know if you have BVD in the herd than not know. It is a disease which impacts the herd in many ways.
