they protect areas from "strangers"- so whatever you want them to accept you introduce early and they won;t bother them(other than normal dog stuff). They aren't much for being "commanded"(ie sit stay ect) but you should get them so that you can handle them. They work off of instincts, so the training consists of telling them not to play too rough when first introduced to the sheep- then just let them bond.
Not all dogs work out. Some hurt the sheep and some just don't have the instincts to do their job right.Some like to roam too much.Some don't like being moved from one territory to another.
You have to make sure the sheep don't eat commercial dog food- BSE issues . Which can be a real pain. Sommeone said they made a feeder with a hole up high that the dog could jump into to eat- that the sheep wouldn't. When I had them I just fed raw and didn't have to worry about the sheep eating the dog food. You can also hand feed, which is good so you can get your hands on the dog when you want to.
If you can get one that has been raised around stock.
