A good "quarter horse" should be fine on hay and grass. If its for your daughter to just tool around on and shes not showing, free choice hay should keep the weight on just fine. I would say keep looking. I have 2 yearling quarterhorses and they are outside all year round with good hay and they are rather rolly polly. FYI don't pay too much for the horse either..there are lots of them around. Perhaps post an ad looking for reasonable priced well bred quarterhorse for my daughter. My guess is you will get lots of replies.
