+1 on Woodford hydrants, but I know nothing about a Merill. Only reason I've seen a Woodford go bad is if electrolysis eats a hole in the pipe. Giving the hydrant a good wrap of electrical tape before burying it should protect the galvanized pipe from interacting with the soil.
