Subject: calves and coyotes

IN
Been calving at the home barn and moving the pairs to another wooded hilly farm at 3-5 days depending on the weather, strength of the calf, etc. Today a cow who calved a week ago was bawling and her calf was now where to be found. We walked this 60 acres most of the day. No calf.

This has happened a couple of times in years past. Same story. one calf gone never to be seen again. Would a coyote or several attack a week old calf? Would or could they drag it off? I figured they wold eat it there and you would find the remains. Everybody was OK Tuesday. Landlord thought she heard a cow bawling last night. The rest (25 pairs) are hanging out around the bank barn.

I haven't seen any coyotes but know they are around. Not aware of any wild dogs. If the calf had got sick and died the cow would be standing over it bawling. Can't figure it out. As always it make me sick and depressed.
