Stratton, Ontario, Canada | I keep them as long as they are active and potent. The longest so far was until 7 years of age, but I have rented bulls that were 8-9, and I know of one neighbor's Hereford bull who was just sold this past fall for breeding for the 4th time in his life at 14 years of age and still breeding 40-50+ cows a year.
I have no problem paying 5K for the right bull, but it has to be the right one. Usually end up pay just around 3K. For some people who pay more for bulls 8-10K+, you have to know what the size of their operation is and how many cows that bull will cover. I know some huge ranches that will run a 2 year old with 40-50 cows every year for as many years as they can. If you pencil your breeding cost at $20 a head, it doesn't take many years to pay back on a bull. |
