Subject: RE: Feed is CHEAP, so is corn,

New Mexico
if you figure it out.

Take 12 cent a lb corn and figure that as your HIGHEST possible total ration cost for beef or dairy.

$6.72 per bu is 12 cents per lb.

Beef cattle convert that at 6 to 1, thus hard feed cost works out to $72 cwt for gain.
Forward fat cattle are in the $110 cwt range.

On dairy, if you fed a cow 40 lbs of corn per day....works out to $4.80 per cow per day.
Milk ( price is currently say $13.85 cwt.,)
Say she milks 80 lbs per day, thus Gross back is in the $11 per cow per day range.

FACT....most folks are not using much corn anyway.

A LOT of cheap excellent quality ingredients out there which make for much cheaper, better rations than the old thought process ( say 20 years out dated ) corn ration.

Times changing.

The HUGE cost ( thus the RISK that needs managed ) in cattle is actually capitalizing the equity UP as this market keeps moving up.
