New Mexico | They had in the 205 to 210 million head of total cattle 4 years ago.
Just like the usa...exporting alot of beef ( basically been killing off the herd, just like the us ).
Stats indicate maybe 193 million total cattle in BR for 2009.
Also, it is felt that the herd numbers may stabilize in the next couple 3 years, likely in the 180 million head range.
Cull cow prices in BR are currently in the $85 cwt range ( as converted to us dollars ).
Herd values are now figured as being worth 40% MORE in total value as compared to 1 year ago.
Herd decline is due to a few reasons:
It's PROFITABLE to keep killing em off.
Land area in the cow regions being more and more switched to soy, and other farmed crops.
ALSO in the remote there...the Enviros have a a pretty good strong hold on govt policy in BR.
Thus remote land use for cattle has become impossible in much of those regions.
Bout the only way the BR folks can stabilize herd numbers at some point is to in fact introduce more productive grass species in the areas where they can still run cattle.
