Subject: RE: New Year - Hired Hands - What Do You Do?

Sunnyside, WA
We have dairy and some crops. Anyone milking cows is not allowed on the cell phone except on scheduled break or emergency. Those working with cows other than milking, I'm a little easier going.

Outside crew has simple rules: its against the law to drive and talk on the phone, so the same goes for our dairy. No talking and operating equipment of any kind. I don't mind a pause now and then, but I also pay these guys to work.

Monthly safety/training meetings are often used to talk about cell phones. I allow emergency and the occasional phone conversation with wife/kids. If it gets out of hand with one employee, I ask one on one what is going on. I don't expect daily emergencies, so it must just be too much time talking.

I went as far as taking away a cell phone from an employee and kept it with me all day. I told him I would answer all calls and find him right away if it was an emergency. Phone never rang once. Need to find out who is making the calls.
