If you think cows are a bit thin and need energy to handle the cold I'd use wheat bales. Remember fibre especially grass type hay keeps cattle warmer than grain or alfalfa. I don't know why baleage wouldn't be advised,its likely the most ideal feed for a brood cow. Take a look at what costs you have in it,but home grown forage will likely be the cheapest. Grain feeding needs to be regular if you're going to do that. Feeding every 3 days is to far apart and the ph levels in the stomach will swing wildly so you'll end up with poor performance. 2 lbs of grain per day over winter will make fat cows. Take a look at adding rumensin/bovatec to the ration. On a all roughage diet you'll save 10% on feed usage. My 2 cents.
