NEMO | Your 1200# cows are costing you $231/head for the same time period as the bigger cows (1733#) costing $333/head. The 1733# cow will bring you another $200+ over the 1200# cow when you cull them(500# x $0.40). Spread that over 4 years and that's $50/calf. Can the 1733# cow raise a calf that's worth $50-60 more than the 1200# cows to make up on the $102 spread (333-231)? Can the 1733# cow breed back and maintain her body condition easier while raising the 650# calf?
I think in the post below it is somewhat misleading showing the big cows costing $333/hd while not showing the cost to keep the 1200# cows at $231/hd. The extra $102 a head cost should be debated.
I personally like a 1200# cow same as you. Another thought to consider, 45- 1200 pound cows weaning 650# calves or 50 - 1200# cows weaning 500# calves. Over the past several years when we sell at the sale barn, the 450- 650# calves all bring home about the same amount of money per head, so I'd rather have more calves than bigger WW's! | |
