| Agree on the direct and indirect gov't payments, but most of those payments originated when prices were half of what they are today. The gov't did it to make sure of a large supply- to keep food prices down. Had those payments not been there, many, many more farm producers would have been lost in the 80's. Those that were left just kept producing.
"Competing in the world market" was a common byline used by economists, market advisors and college professors to inform producers that they had to "smarten up" or they would be lost in the shuffle. Many producers were lost anyway. Learned the hard way how to compete in the world market.
