West Ky | This is a little off topic of the prices and all but I think it is a sham for the oil companies to get paid .50 cents per gallon for the ethanol use. Here's why..... when gas was refined it was classified as 87 octane 89 or 93 octane as a general rule of thumb. Some places have 91 octane. . Okay here's my point...... Ethanol has an octane rating of 113, so when you add it to say 87 octane gas it should boost the octane of that product up to something a bit higher. So if you have 9 gallons of 87 octane gas and add 1 gallon of 113 octane ethanol the new octane should read 89.6 octane on the pump. If you use 93 octane gas it should read around 95 octane at the pump. But it doesn't.... Why is that anybody know why? All I can come up with is that the oil companies are using cheaper grade gas and spiking it with ethanol to boost the octane of it and also cleaning up the emissions at the same time. Plus getting 50 cents a pop to use it from the tax payers.
