Subject: Re: Heat and Corn yield?

Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska
Last year we had a cool August...and most of the summer for that matter. This year we're slightly dryer but not too concerned. But we have been HOT and HUMID. Ears have filled well and not much tipping back but the corn is starting to dent and the kernals don't look very deep. We are maturing WAY early.
Last year every field we harvested ran 10-20% over what I would have guessed. That's 10 to 20 extra bushels per acre on dryland that we thought would make 120, was making 130 to 150. This year I would expect the opposite. I think we have 120 to 130 bushel corn but I would bet quite a bit we are going to be disappointed. More than likely the corn is going to be in the 100 to 120 range.
