New Mexico
pull em off the cows weighing in the 300 range.

Calves at the 250 range generally are eating cake right along with their moms so splitting em early works pretty well.

Just put the calves in their own pasture and cake em.

What the afore does, is saves alot of grass for the cow maintence end. And once the calves are pulled those P 1 cows make a pretty decent living on strait rough range ( no cake ).

The short weaned calves generally don't gain much for about 60 days...just grow frame.
