That is sort of my feeling on this too - if it isn't broken, don't fix it. My steer average would have been about 700 lb except for one outlier in the low 600's. That cow is going to be culled. But having big calves is not profitable if they come out of huge cows that require more grass/hay. This is why I am looking at the 50% ratio as a key. If I can have a herd of 1200-1300 lb Hereford cows that can calve on their own and wean between 600 and 700 lb calves and do it every year without creep feeding I will be very happy - and make some money at this. Every herd requires management. I don't see where having Domino in my bull's pedigree several times has hurt me or the Hereford breed. Thanks for your reply. Jim at Dawn
