We have started tagging every calf at birth for the past 3 or so years and it really isn't a problem. Most of the time the calf is less than a day old and can't really run away from you easily. I actually think it is easier on the calves to do it the earliest you can. I use Z-tags and just try to center it. Their ears rarely bleed, but if they do it isn't a big deal.
