I think you've got the right idea, ratlakefarms. While I would certainly like to have a few more acres as I'm considered a pretty small operator anymore, I still make a decent living and don't work off the farm. It all boils down to what kind of start you had and then controlling finances. Dad helped me or I wouldn't be here and I'll try to help my stepson when the time comes if he's interested or he won't be able to start either. It's kind of funny but a lot of farmers reach retirement age very wealthy on paper but I would imagine that most don't want to sell out and would much prefer to keep living a "normal" lifestyle and pass the farm and machinery on to someone else who will take care of it.
