The battles in the South Pacific had to be in a class all by themselves. Of all my relatives and family friends who served in WWII, the stories I heard from the Pacific had the longest effect on the participants.
The jungles, the malaria and the absolute terror of an enemy you couldn't see or anticipate left some with the scars that we now know by the polite name of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
Whatever we call it now, it was hell. plain and simple.
