North End I-15 | We took a back road trip home west from Havre west back in the 80's
In this part of the world it is hard to get lost , Hi way 2 to the south , Canadian border to the north, The Hills are visible for 100 miles . So if you stay in that band between the hi way and the border and keep heading west it will take you home .....Once you are past the Milk /River .
We had a new Eagle 4 x 4 wagon so we headed north and west @ Gilford, Montana , When we ran out of road we would follow the old 2 track trails till it met up with another elevated road running the "right way". once in a while we would run on to a fenced section of grass , 4 x 4 needed in some of those area detours :>)
One of our observations were , hardy no one lives out there . The farms with a livable year round house were fewer than the old run down homestead era homes.
It seems most all live in "town " during the school year . The exceptions were the diversified Farming Cattle operations . And they probably also had homes in town. The little towns were 10 miles or so apart along the "Great Northern " and thus the small towns .
@ one time each town had a primary and secondary school , School sports and inter town rivalry was the fall winter activity. Foot ball , basket ball game attendance and church were the weekly social outings . Strong ties to the school and community business existed .
Then the aging of the population and consolidation of schools , farms , business's banks began .
The hi -line is just a shell of what it was in the 50's
No not many live year round on the farms in that area .
I had not installed spell check , so did so , found 10 mis-spelled words !!
Ouch ! :<(
