Subject: Do you live on your farm?

West Union, Illinois

It seems to me I see more and more farmers who do not live on the farm.  The break seems to be about my age.  Younger than me it seems most live away from the "center of operations".  Older than I am most often the farmer lives on his farm. It could be kind of like my situation;  the "farm" was based at Dad's.  Rather than duplicate things, it has remained the "farm'.

Grandpa lived on his farm. The house is about halfway between the corn crib and the barn.  Dad built a house with tool sheds and grain bins around it.

My home, while in the country and nearby, really doesn't have any connection to the farm.  If I were to retire or even just get out of farming, my house and the farming operation would be relatively unaffected.

Is this a trend?

Most businesses the owners do not live at the business.  We keep harping on the fact farming is a business.  Maybe we are getting to the point it's a business and not where we live.
