SW Saskatchewan
It is a bit of an insight how many people on this site sign.

Back in the 60's the province still had the School for the Deaf (my wife had done an internship period there) but the policy soon switched to integration. In my wife's years as a teacher, she only had one hearing impaired child so our exposure is quite limited.

In that case, the school division hired a full time aid to work with that child and he had enough hearing that with aids hooked to a wireless transmitter used by the teacher and/or aid he managed comprehension.

Encouragement was made to lipread, and my wife had certification in speech development so she could coach the proper formation of sounds so he could speak.

To sides to the coin-the hearing impaired are not dependent on signing so can participate without dependence on an translator BUT there remains a communication problem that is frustrating. The numbers of people who sign in Canada is limited.

Hats off to all who learn and practice signing so they can communicate with others.
