| Years ago, it was dad's idea of a vacation to take a weekend trip up to Chicago to visit the Maxwell Street flea market. We would stay at the Turf motel in Cicero Saturday night, then before daylight sunday morning, head out, eating breakfast at the Blue Island Cafe, and get to Maxwell Street shortly after daylight. Was quite the flea market in its day, but long gone now. Been close to 30 years since I was there. This was in the old part of town with the brick row buildings, and no-one in their right mind would be there after dark. People from all over would clean out the garage, house, (and the neighbors house?), and throw it on a table, on the sidewalk, on the street, and the sale was on. Also had all kinds of food, new clothes, shoes, you name it. Just wondering if anyone ever used to go there to the flea market?
PS: If you ever saw "The Blues Brothers" movie with John Belushi, and Dan Aykroyd, in one scene they stopped by Maxwell Street to find a friend of theirs, when the flea market was going on. | |
