I like my no-till coulters but I don't run them as deep as I plant. What I want them to do is to provide a little more crumbled dirt for good seed to soil contact. There's nothing wrong with taking your planter out without seed and experimenting with the settings. I'm a stickler with having no side to side slop in the closure wheel assemblies. If you have side to side slop you risk having a closure wheel running right over the row. This can cause seed to be flipped out of the seed trench.
