Southeast WI
A good friends dad passed away last winter. They farmed some (well really his wife farmed) and Martin was a salesman in ag. Everything in their life revolved around ag and ag business. Our local FFA, with community support and our FFA alumni, built a greenhouse. One way to finance was by selling bricks for the sidewalk. We bought a brick and etched in it was "in memory of Martin..". I included the brochure with their condolences card and said we are honoring martins life this way as we feel he would approve.

I think that's the best way so the grieving don't have an extra step as you've run into. However it's done is fine tho as in your case they are honoring Sandy even if it's a bit of an inconvenience.
