Many years ago, not a spoof, but some larger businesses would have a phone line extended from another telephone office so the number would appear local but they were answering from 30 miles away, this was called a “FX”, line “foreign exchange”
People would think they were calling a local business but it was not, the business was 30 miles away in a larger city, cleaning customers from far away
