My dad did it at a chemical plant for years. Given he had some physical and mental problems it really messed him up. No way I would ever go through what he did. No way I’d ever recommend anyone doing it. Off shifts are bad enough. Companies should compensate employees accordingly. At the factory where I work we do 12 shifts. Three days on three days off. Stay on days or nights. Trying to go back to a normal hours on your days off for the night guys is tough. When I was on nights I never got used to it. Eventually just got used to being tired all the time.


I think there are studies that show shift work shortens your life expectancy. When I was on the union bargaining committee I tried to push for a shift premium but it was like beating my head against a wall. I’m sure if we got a shift premium corporate fears it would set a precedent to other sites.
