NWIL | It isn't very far behind rye in this area, maybe a day or two. It seems how early it can get seeded in the fall and how much fall growth happens is the biggest determining factor. Certainly nothing to be of concern. But it hangs on at that peak area longer before going to all straw. In the monsoon of 2019 I didn't get it made until the first week of June when ideally I would have mowed it around May 20. Still made great feed.
I used to plant beans behind it, but gave the SS a try about five years ago when I had a bad winter kill year on alfalfa and was looking for bales. Haven't looked back since, I'm at a net positive just planning on those 15 acres being set aside for feed all year and have dropped my hay ground in half giving me those acres back in full season crop instead of rolling the dice of the later beans after trit being decent or not, which seemed to be a 50/50 proposition.
If you are thinking of SS I encourage you to give it a try. I've been very pleased with it. | |
