NW TX Panhandle | 2x2 is best up to a point. If your levels are very low, after a few seasons you will be able to see a difference in plant size where the plants cross over old 2x2 rows. Ex: some plants will have only this years 2x2 to utilize, whereas other plants will have both this years 2x2 to utilize & leftover 2x2 from the previous years(s). At some point, these P dead areas need to get built up. Otherwise, the longer you go with just a 2x2, you will see ore variation in plant sizes due to varying amounts of P available. Also, whenever possible, add N with a P application (keep in mind your salt index for your fertilizer mix to prevent fertilizer burn of the roots). The addition of N does 2 things: 1st, the N will lower the Ph of the blend which will make the P more available to the pants in high Ph soils (cheap chelation). 2nd, the addition of N does provide some movement of P to occur. If your not familiar with this, search - Kansas State University, Dr. Barney Gordon, Movement of P in soils. He has proven that mixing N with P fertilizers improves movement of P into the root zone. In the Western regions, a lot of 2x2 applications were converted to banding fertilizer, on top of the row, behind the plater. This has been proven for years now on thousands of corn acres.
