They seem to be quite rare. The 1859 event turned night into day across half the globe. Such an event would be noticeable, even to pre-industrial societies. If more things like that had happened anytime since the 1500's, you'd think there'd be records of them.

Today, we'd have a few hours warning. Enough time to shut things down and get tractors parked inside tin sheds and the doors closed. If we reacted in time. Most people probably wouldn't.
