Subject: RE: Variable rate N theory

I grow cereals and oil seeds and look at it a little different. I use probability of profit as a guide for my variable rates. Our nh3 is applied in one pass, so you have an advantage with a second pass. I also have sand ridges and areas that pool water. I look at an area and decide what is the probability of achieving certain yield levels. Then look at the fertilizer rates to achieve those yield. I then figure out which one is the most profitable over the long run. If you get rain 2 out of 10 year on the sand and get an average crop but get nothing the rest of the time it probably pencils out to fertilize for the low yield all the time, since the profit on the 2 good years won’t offset the losses from the other 8 years. So in short I fertilize for maximum long term profit. I also put in some flat rate check strips for comparison to see if we are still on track.
