Subject: RE: Variable rate N theory

West Kentucky
You are VRing Nitrogen by bushel produced even when you put a straight rate if you assume your best ground uses less N/bushel and your worst ground requires more N/bushel. We have been VRing seed, dry fertilizer, and N for a long. Of the 3, I would consider the impact of VRing N as being the least significant. In reality, we don't have a wide range per acre in total units of N anymore. Normally the range will be within 30 units from best ground to worst ground with a typical range of around 175-205. If you break it down by bushel though, the range is much more significant. On our best ground, I normally shoot for around .8 lbs of N/bushel, and our worst ground it is closer to 1.15 lbs/bushel. Timing wise, all preplant and at plant N is straight rate totaling around 65 units with the remaindered being variable rated at around v3. Not that this is the correct method, but it is what we have settled on over the years.
