Tablerock Ranch eastern Wa | It will absolutely work, if you have the time to do the work. Calf is almost never the problem; best is to skin and cape if possible... if not rub the older calf down really well with the hide of the dead calf and put the "hungry" calf on the bag with the cow in the chute. after it nurses squirt milk on the calf's head and tail head and bring calf around to the cow still in the chute and let her smell and lick it off. Put them in a pen together and observe, if she continues to lick and mother the calf it's a good sign, if she is at all a risk to the new calf separate and repeat at next feeding. at any time feel free to introduce dog pressure if the cow is friendly to the new calf, at a safe distance, bring a dog up with you outside the pen, most times it will make the cow nervous and will expose how well she has accepted the calf by any protective behavior, or will click the magic hormonal switch and seal the deal. GOOD LUCK that is real cowman stuff your doing! |
