Wisconsin | Where are you? and how unprotected is the well pump? a shallow well pump above ground? or a submersible without a pitless adapter, or what are we talking about?
For the hydrant, you could insulate the hydrant, and/or put a pit under it to supply ground heat, either with a water pipe circulating or air circulating, obviously more practical on a new one that you have equipment in place to dig. 4" pvc filled with foam, or 3" inside empty for air circulation, 6" outside and foam in between.
If you're just worried about damage and not the hassle of thawing. A piece of foam sticking down below ground level will provide enough room for expansion to prevent breakage. Not sure what kind of foam would work and how exactly you'd install it, but if you could, it would prevent freeze damage. | |
